Waterford Bed and Breakfast, Cheap Hotel and Guest House Accommodation

Ireland’s historic oldest city, Waterford, has many attractions to delight the visitor, being packed with historic treasures as well as situated near some of Ireland’s most scenic coastlines. Now the primary centre in Ireland’s south-east region, its setting is, as its name suggests, at the head of a harbour. Waterford Port has been one of the nation’s most prominent ports for over a millenium, and was the centre of a boom in the 19th century of a burgeoning shipbuilding industry.

Here, on the quayside, you will find Waterford’s most recognisable landmark, Reginald’s Tower, which is the oldest urban civic building in Ireland and the oldest monument to still be known by its Viking name. The tower is at the apex of the ‘Viking triangle’, the oldest part of the city which thrived during Viking times but remains now as a charming historic backwater with fascinating architectural relics and enticing contemporary restaurants. This is the area to explore in search of the delightful Adelphi Quay, the William Vincent Wallace Plaza and the John Roberts Square commercial centre. Here, along with the Arundel Square, Red Square and City Square you are in the shopping hub of the city, where you will find both large stores and boutiques offering locally crafted gifts and souvenirs such as the Waterford Crystal for which the city is known. Glass, or crystal, was manufactured in the area from 1783 until early in 2009, and was exquisitely crafted under the Waterford name, and whose production can be witnessed at the Waterford Crystal Visitor Centre on the Cork Road.
The Dyehouse Gallery and Waterford Pottery is a wonderful pottery works operated by the renowned potter Liz McKay, selling imaginative original items typical of the high quality of craft for sale locally.

The area is a natural playground for sports enthusiasts, with activities on offer ranging from golf and angling to watersports and cycling. It is also possible to see some of the local sights from the carriages of the Waterford and Suir Valley Railway, where a narrow gauge railway follows over 6km of pictureque abandoned track running between Kilmeaden and Waterford offering panoramic views of the rolling countryside. Another day trip could take you to Lismore, a former monastic settlement founded in the 7th century, which now has a fascinating Heritage Centre. It is set in the beautiful Blackwater Valley, surrounded by the Knockmealdown Mountains not far from the villages of Cappoquin and Ballyduff.

The dazzling coastline features such highlights as Tramore, a lovely seaside resort known for its surfing as well as the popular heated indoor Splashworld, and the historic resort of Ardmore. The beaches here and at Bunhamon, Woodstown and Clonea are known for their superb water quality as well as their pretty settings. The Copper Coast offers fascinating geology and wonderful walking country within the gorgeous Comeragh Mountains at Bunhamon, Stradbally and Clonea.

Some of the local festivals which you may enjoy include  the John Roberts Weekend in May, celebrating the life and work of the local architect, and the World Oceans Festival in June which has beach sport and wildlife events for all ages. The Maritime Festival and the South East Gardens Festival, also held in June, show the city and its environs at their best, while the August Spraoi Street Festival is the biggest street carnival in Ireland and attracts international performers.
