Limerick Bed and Breakfast, Cheap Hotel and Guest House Accommodation
Limerick is the principal city of County Limerick and second largest city of Munster and Limerick is the third largest city in the Republic of Ireland. Situated in south-west Ireland, this is the charming rural county where Ireland’s longest river, the Shannon, flows out into the Atlantic Ocean, with the City of Limerick located on its banks. It is easily accessible by air, being only a short distance from Shannon Airport, Ireland’s second largest, and also has excellent rail and bus services connecting it to the rest of Ireland, and putting it firmly on the tourist map as a delightful stop on a tour around the region.
Limerick
Its rich and colourful history is evident through a wealth of attractions open to the visitor to explore: its compact layout makes for enjoyable walking tours which can be self-guided or taking advantage of its excellent locally organised tours and excursions. In any case, you cannot fail to come across pretty, well-manicured parks and gardens, elegant Georgian squares, colourful row houses and quaint neighbourhoods with inviting pubs along the way. Meandering strolls follow the course of the river, providing you with the ideal refreshing and relaxing way to view your surroundings while you plan your trip.
In terms of accommodation, you will find a full range of options, while the local cuisine excels at such venues as the Horse and Hound or Dolans. The typical full Irish breakfast of eggs, rashers, baked beans and kidney pie will leave you with sufficient energy to tackle even the fullest of itineraries, while evening meals can be enjoyed in restaurants serving international cuisine.
One of the most memorable landmarks to which you should dedicate a few hours’ visit is the Castle of King John, built between 1200 and 1210 and recently part of a cultural renaissance which has reinstated Limerick as a city proud of its past and eager to attract attention. This treasure, along with the neighbouring Bishop’s Palace, forms the impressive skyline of the old city with its sturdy drum towers and curtain walls and has been recently restored. It houses a series of interesting museums telling part of the tale of the evolution of this city, a tale which can be put in broader context at the Hunt Museum, the Irish Palatine Association Museum and the Limerick Museum nearby. Limerick’s Georgian past can be investigated at the Georgian House and Garden Museum, while the journey around the Lough Gur Neolithic Settlement and Stone Age Centre begins in 3,000 BC. The Limerick City Gallery of Art holds a permanent collection of important 18th, 19th and 20th century Irish art, with around 40 temporary exhibitions held annually.
As Ireland’s sporting capital, Limerick is home to the splendid stadium of Thomond Park, where you may be tempted to watch a game of hurling, one of Ireland’s national passions. But away from the main attractions, it is the chance encounter over a pint of Guiness in a cosy local bar which will make your visit special. Limerick has been reborn but its traditions still exist cosily alongside the impressive modern highlights. Drop in at the Tom Collins on Cecil Street or at Tom and Jerry’s on Lower Glentworth and allow yourself to be seduced by a glass of Jameson and the musical lilt of the Irish craic.
