Galway Bed and Breakfast, Cheap Hotel and Guest House Accommodation
Galway Hotel Break, Irelands forth largest city and only city in the province on Connacht.
Known as Ireland’s ‘Cultural Heart’, Galway is a vibrant city where local traditions are kept alive and celebrated vigorously during its many festivals held annually, such as the Galway Arts Festival in July, the Galway Races in August and the Galway International Oyster Festival in September. It is Ireland’s third largest city, located on the west coast in the province of Connacht, and is set on the banks of the River Corrib. In the Middle Ages this walled city was the principle Irish trade port supplying to the Continent, but following its decline and then ruin during the Potato famines it did not really regain its status until, along with the whole of Ireland, it boomed in the late 20th century.
Its rich history includes a Norman invasion then rule by the ‘Tribes of Galway’, a visit from Christopher Columbus and a nine-month siege by Cromwellian forces at the end of the 17th century. Its Macnas parade is now the most important crowd-puller, with a massive influx of people filling its narrow city streets to full capacity to witness breathtaking outdoor performances and partake in general revelry. In effect, this is a city to visit in order to be guaranteed a taste of ‘true Irishness’ – it is associated with Irish language, music, song and dance, and has no less than 51 venues for events including the National Irish Language Theatre, the radio headquarters for Gaeltacht and in NUI Galway holds important national archives for the Celtic languages. The Druid Theatre Company has won international acclaim for its sophisticated production and direction of theatre performances.
Of interest architecturally, apart form its delightful harbour and charming shopping streets as well as the focal point of recently revamped Eyre Square, are the st. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, the Cathedral, the quadrangle of the National University of Ireland and the historic Hotel Meyrick and the Spanish Parade. Visitors should explore the medieval Kirwan’s lane, recently redeveloped as a residential area, Portumna Castle, Coole Park, Thoor Ballylee and the Tuam Mill Museum.
The city is a gateway to many of the scenic areas of the county, such as Connemara and the mountain range of the Twelve Bens. Clifden is the location of the landing of the first Trans-Atlantic air crossing by Alcock and Brown, set amidst gorgeous rolling countryside. Eastwards, the coastline is dotted with islands, with the main attraction being the Aran Islands which can be toured on day trips from Galway harbour. Here, visit Dun Aonghasa at Inishmore, perched spectacularly on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. County Galway has several freshwater lakes, with trout, salmon and coarse fishing being a popular local pastime.
Excursions to local historic towns should take the visitor to the fascinating medieval walled town of Athenry and Dunguaire Castle in Kinvara where a medieval banquet is held every night in authentic 16th century surroundings. Other heritage sites not to be missed are Aughnanure Castle and Teach an Phiarsaigh (Patrick Pearse’s Cottage) in Rosmuc. This is a perfect setting for touring by car, walking in the beautiful countryside and stopping off for a guided tour or browsing in a craft centre. Quintessential Ireland.
