Cork is the principal city and administrative centre of County Cork and the largest city of the province of Munster. Cork has the nickname "the Rebel County"due to its participation in the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. It is situated on the River Lee, an island in the river forming the main part of the city centre with quays and docks along the broad waterway of the Lee on the East side of the city. Cork was the European Capital of Culture for 2005 and Cork Airport is the gateway to the South of Ireland.
Many of the city's buildings are in the Georgian style, the most famous building is the church tower of Shandon. There are two cathedrals in the city, The Roman Catholic St Marys Cathedral and the Church of Ireland St Finbarres Cathedral and Cork Opera House is one of the few such venues in Ireland.
