Local Information
Limerick is the fourth largest city in Ireland in the midwest of Ireland. It lies on the river Shannon in County Limerick, a province of Munster. Limerick was originally a viking settlement before the Normans redesigned the city in th 12th century adding notable architecture such as King John's Castle and St Mary's Cathedral. It was historically an agricultural driven city but now multinationals are based in Limerick including Dell, Analog Devices and Vistakon (a contact lens subsiduary of Johnson and Johnson). This has driven economic success alongside of the University of Limerick, Shannon Airport and Shannon Development an economic agency that provided tax incentives to companies locating in the area surrounding Shannon Airport, which is 15 minutes from Limerick. It is now one of the main tourist destinations in Ireland and provides 'Street Ambassadors', people designated to help others around and make the stay in Limerick more enjoyable. Attractions include Hunt Museum, Angela's Ashes walking tour of Limerick City, Hop on-Hop off Sightseeing tour of Limerick City, The historical walking tour of Limerick and Boat tours along the River Shannon, Georgian house and gardens, Treaty Stone, and more. Adare village and the Foynes Flying Boat Museum are on the outskirts of the city. Coonagh Cross Shopping Centre will open in late 2007 and will be the biggest shopping centre in the Mid-West region.
Limerick City has a number of nightclubs such as Trinity Rooms with acts like the Human League, Femi Kuti and Roger Sanchez having played there in the last year. Traditional Irish music is played at the established Dolans Warehouse and pubs such as Nancy Blakes, The Wicked Chicken, Mickey Martins and The Old Quarter give a vaired drinking experience. Belltable Arts Centre is host for local playwriting and drama. The Limerick City Art Gallery is the city’s primary venue for contemporary art exhibitions and hosts Ireland's premier annual contemporary exhibition EV+A (Exhibition of Visual+ Art) .
Limerick is considered the home of rugby union in Ireland and since the onset of the all Ireland league in 1991, this competition has been dominated by Limerick teams, Shannon, Garryowen, Young Munster. Munster European Heineken Cup matches are now played at Thomond Park. Hurling and Gaelic games are played in the city
