Cork is the principal city and administrative centre of County Cork and the largest city of the province of Munster. Cork has the nickname "the Rebel County"due to its participation in the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. It is situated on the River Lee, an island in the river forming the main part of the city centre with quays and docks along the broad waterway of the Lee on the East side of the city. Cultural life is vibrant; music, theatre, dance, and film all play a prominent role in city life. Notable companies and festivals include Corcadorca Theatre Company, Cork Film Festival, the Triskel Arts Centre, Cork Jazz Festival, the Cork Academy of Dramatic Art, The Everyman Palace Theatre and the Granary Theatre. There is a covered English Market fish, fruit, meat, spices and luxury foods. Traditional foods include Crubeens, Tripe and Drishee. Retail trade in Cork City is growing quickly with a mix of modern, state of the art shopping centres and family owned local shops providing unique and often hand-made crafts.
Industry is prominent in Cork in particular pharmaceuticals with Pfizer Inc (famous for Viagra) and Novartis large employers in the region; the European call centre and manufacturing plant for Apple Computer is located in Cork.
Gaelic football, hurling and association football are the most popular sports in Cork. Cork City F.C. play their home games at Turners Cross stadium. Cork are the record holders for hurling titles and there are many Gaelic Athletic Association clubs in Cork City. A huge variety of water sports can be found in the harbour and river areas of the city, both Rowing and Sailing are growning in popularity.
