Local Information
Arklow is a historic viking town and the second largest in County Wicklow on the east coast of Ireland. Arklow is divided by the River Avoca which is crossed by the Nineteen Arches Bridge that links the south or main part of the town with the north part, called Ferrybank. The town has expanded rapidly in the last decade and is a thriving commuter town due to its proximity to Dublin. The Bridgewater Centre is being built on the Ferrybank and will house a 6-screen mulitplex cinema reflecting the growth in retail and entertainment in the town.
The Gypsy Moth III, the yacht sailed by Francis Chichester in the first solo transatlantic yacht race in 1960, was built in Arklow. There is an art gallery that currently exhibits the art-work of well known artist Nuala Holloway. For music fans Arklow is the title setting for the Van Morrison's 1974 song "Streets of Arklow" and is the home town of pop group Moloko's lead singer Róisín Murphy.
